Results since starting sales in this area, the company have sold trading cards for a total of £365,000 over that period, and they now hold dedicated sales for each of the main collectable card games, Pokémon, Magic The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! with live and timed sales held every month online on the Ewbank’s website.

As a result of this trading card success, Ewbank’s have now expended their programme to include specialist standalone sales of Vintage / Retro computer games. “It’s amazing how new collecting fields like this, bringing in younger buyers, continue to emerge like this,” says Ewbank’s partner Andrew Ewbank, whose firm has also sold millions of pounds worth of entertainment and memorabilia and collectables over the past five years.

2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the world's first collectable trading card game, Magic the Gathering, and what better way to celebrate than to bring one of the first sealed products to auction. Going under the hammer on April 21st is an original and factory sealed Unlimited starter deck. Unlimited was the third print run of Magic released in December 1993 and features cards from the Alpha and Beta sets in a white boarder. A starter deck contains a random assortment of 60 cards but guarantees three ‘rare’ cards – one of which could be the most iconic trading card of all time – the Black Lotus, a card that in near mint condition is selling for upwards of £15,000. The estimate for the deck is £9,000 – 12,000 in the April Auction. Black Lotus cards from the earlier Alpha and Beta sets sell for multiples of this amount. An autographed and PSA graded 10 Black Lotus Alpha card holds the record MTG auction price at over £400,000. While a rare Black Lotus Proof Card, signed by the artist was purchased by musician Post Malone for over £650,000 in recent years.

Roy Raftery is Ewbank’s specialist in this area and comments “People value the ability to buy from different sources and they feel like they know they’re buying the real deal - our condition reports and detailed descriptions put peoples’ minds at ease when buying something like a base set booster box for over £10,000.  We are building relationships with a lot of our customers, we have individual die-hard collectors, reputable businesses and individuals who buy with the intention to resell and even content creators and celebrities, which really shows our diverse range of sellers and buyers. Our auctions are getting bigger and bigger, and our prices are a true indication of where the market is at. We recently sold over 160 PSA graded cards - this is something our customer base have been asking for!”. Selling at auction costs the same as eBay and takes away the stress for the seller of authentication, photography, postage, and potential buyer disputes.

Ewbank’s are a family run firm but with an international reach, listing on the major bidding platforms as well as their own live bidding site to customers all over the world.
