Scythe picks up award for expert game, while Go Cuckoo! collects accolade for best children's title

Escape-the-room game Unlock and Jamey Stegmaier’s acclaimed strategy epic Scythe were among the big winners celebrated at this year’s As d’Or (Golden Ace) awards at the annual International Games Festival in Cannes, France.

Space Cowboys’ app-driven puzzle title picked up the prize for overall Game of the Year in the general category, fighting off competition from former Spiel des Jahres winner Codenames, item-guessing puzzler Imagine and Kingdomino from Bruno Cathala.

Meanwhile, Scythe – a worthy winner in our opinion – swiped the accolade for best expert title, besting Monolith’s adaptation of Conan (which we had mixed thoughts about, to say the least) and deckbuilder Star Realms.

Over in the children’s category, stick-collecting dexterity game Go Cuckoo! was named the top pick, outdoing zoological card game Animouv and Stone Age Junior, which previously collected last year’s Kinderspiel des Jahres.
