Spoiler: it doesn’t end well for humanity

It may not seem it, but it was almost 50 years ago that the Earth was taken over by ultra-intelligent primates after humanity was reduced to a primitive state by nuclear war. Oh, wait, that was only the release of the iconic Charlton Heston-starring movie Planet of the Apes. Well, at least we have all that still to look forward to.

To mark the half-century since the 1968 film came out – and to try and forget the later Tim Burton remake – we previously reported that there is a Planet of the Apes board game on the way from Arkham Horror creator Richard Launius based on the original entry in the series.

It turns out that the recent Planet of the Apes prequel series (which is worth watching) is now getting a board game spin-off, too, ahead of the third and final instalment War for the Planet of the Apes hitting cinema screens later this year.

Planet of the Apes: The Miniatures Board Game is being developed by Z First Impact designer Hervé Sagnier, and – as the name suggests – looks to be a blend between an adventure board game and a miniatures wargame.

One to four players can take part, but it’s not clear whether they will be working together to battle the apes as the human resistance or if they will be able to control armies of chimps, gorillas and baboons, too.

The box will include ‘dozens’ of miniatures of monkeys and humans alike, plus multiple 3D game boards that serve as the terrain for battles.

That’s about all we know for the time being. Publisher WYSIWYGames has plans to launch a Kickstarter for Planet of the Apes: The Miniatures Board Game next spring.
