Last standee standing

Has someone invented a rule yet that explains the inevitable Monopoly spin-off that follows a pop culture phenomenon? It happened to Super Mario, it happened to Warhammer 40,000, it happened to the Beatles and now it’s happening to Fortnite. Maybe it should be called Rich Uncle Pennybags’ Law.

Yes, Fortnite is getting its own version of Monopoly based on the ridiculously popular battle royale video game that pits 100 players against each other in an ever-shrinking arena to be the last person standing.

Monopoly: Fortnite Edition adds in some aspects of the video game’s gameplay, including a storm cards that mimic the constantly closing confines of the battleground and must be drawn as each player passes Go, where they risk losing HP tokens – this edition’s stand-in for paper money.

Instead of community chests, you’ll find golden loot chests full of weapons, health packs, items and more to take down your opponents. One of the game’s standard dice has been replaced by a custom action battle die to resolve encounters between players, and its signature building mechanics have been translated into wall cards.

Taking the place of Monopoly’s real estate hotspots are the already iconic and wordplay-heavy locations of Fortnite’s map, from Tilted Towers to Tomato Town.

One notable chance is the absence of metal or plastic pawns, with cardboard standees showing some of Fortnite’s more popular player skins representing the characters on the board – unlike the free-to-play PC, console and mobile game, you won’t have to cough up any extra money to get the costumes here. (Yet.)

Monopoly might be just the beginning for Fortnite on the tabletop, too, as Hasbro mentions its plans for “additional licensed games” and “role play” tie-ins in the future – as well as Nerf guns, for what that’s worth. They'll be up against unofficial Fortnite-like Last One Standing, which successfully Kickstarted itself earlier this year and takes clear inspiration from the huge battle royale game in both look and gameplay.

Monopoly: Fortnite Edition will be jumping from the Battle Bus and parachuting into shops in the UK this autumn.
