Dungeons & Dragons had Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter; now, Pathfinder is getting its own computer RPG: Kingmaker.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is the first full PC roleplaying game based on Paizo’s fantasy RPG, but far from the first video game based on the tabletop universe, following the digitalisation of card game spin-off Pathfinder Adventures. It's not the only Pathfinder game headed to PC, with MMORPG Pathfinder Online having been in the works for a number of years and currently on track for launch next year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, newly-formed developer Owlcat Games says that Kingmaker will feature single-player isometric gameplay reminiscent of 1990s CRPGs such as Baldur’s Gate, Fallout and Arcanum.

Players will be able to create a character from more than 10 classes and seven races, recruit companions and set out into the world of Golarion to complete quests and battle over 100 types of monster.

The game is set over a period of five years, with the core story clocking in at around 40 hours – you’ll be looking at twice that time to complete all the side quests, too.

The narrative is based on the existing Pathfinder Adventure Path called Kingmaker, and is being headed by Chris Avellone, the veteran video game writer who has worked on series including Fallout, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Planescape.

A major part of the gameplay involves claiming regions of the world to build up a kingdom, indulging in politics and diplomacy that includes leading troops and building up settlements.

Owlcat is looking for $500,000 for the game on Kickstarter, and has raised more than half of that with the campaign planned to run until July 12th. A digital copy of the game is $28, with a boxed edition costing $55.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is due for release in August 2018.
