Seminal sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica is being turned into an X-Wing-style spaceship-battling miniatures game.

Battlestar Galactica: Starship Battles has been designed by Andrea Angiolino and Andrea Mainini, who previously created World War I aerial dogfighting game Wings of Glory and its naval spin-off Sails of Glory, both of which use a similar movement and combat system to the later Star Wars-themed smash hit.

Like those games, Starship Battles will include pre-assembled, ready-painted models that can be used out of the box, mounted on custom bases that will apparently support the title’s “unique game mechanics”.

Although details are thin on the ground about how exactly the game will play from turn to turn, it’s been confirmed that players will control one or more Colonial or Cylon ships, facing each other in either straight skirmishes or other types of missions – suggesting an objective-based format to some scenarios.

The gameplay has been specifically designed to simulate the “unique dynamics” of the space battles seen in the series – so hopefully we can expect some inventive use of Newtonian laws. Despite this, there’s the promise that the rules won’t be complicated.

The best news is that Starship Battles will include ships from both the original ‘classic’ 1970s TV show and its 21st-century ‘reimagined’ series, which ended its run in 2010.

War of the Ring and Wings of Glory studio Ares Games has promised a full public unveiling for the game at Gen Con this August, with an unannounced release date to follow.
