Cyberpunk 2077, the video game based on Mike Pondsmith’s seminal eighties tabletop RPG, is bringing things full circle with an official card game set in the neon-drenched universe.

Cyberpunk 2077 – Afterlife: The Card Game has been designed by the ever-prolific Eric Lang of Blood Rage, Rising Sun and the upcoming Trudvang Legends fame.

Lang has plenty of experience turning video games into tabletop titles, having created the very decent Bloodborne card game and the app-assisted XCOM board game. His credits on other licensed card games include the TCGs of Star Wars, Call of Cthulhu and A Game of Thrones, so it’s safe to say he’s got a pretty good handle on what makes a card game tick.

Lang said he’s been a fan and player of Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk since the RPG’s first edition (then known as Cyberpunk 2013, before it later became Cyberpunk 2020, V3.0 and this year’s Cyberpunk Red) in 1988.

Cyberpunk 2077 – Afterlife is set in developer CD Projekt Red’s central video game setting of Night City, a location which first appeared in the original tabletop RPG.

The players are ‘Fixers’ looking to hire a tech-savvy crew, kit them out with high-tech gear and use them to fulfil missions. Completing missions earns the Fixers street cred, while the crew that make it back from their dangerous assignments can become veterans, helping to train up fresh recruits.

The gameplay is built around an “innovative” card-drafting mechanic that uses a custom dashboard. Players choose which cards they need, but will have to lose other cards in order to afford the right people and equipment.

Afterlife is the first time publisher CMON and CD Projekt Red have teamed up on a project, but the two companies have already confirmed plans for further games as the result of their collaboration.

Cyberpunk 2077 – Afterlife: The Card Game has been given a release date of 2020 – potentially around with the video game’s launch on April 16th next year – with no Kickstarter campaign mentioned.
