Star Wars: Battle of Hoth is Here!

10 September 2025

Get ready for Battle of Hoth! From the 29th of August, you’ll be able to get your hands on Star Wars: Battle of Hoth, a new game that brings one of the saga’s most iconic battles to the tabletop.

Days of Wonder, the studio best known for games like Ticket to Ride and Memoir ’44, is now blending fast-paced strategy with cinematic flair. Set during the legendary clash between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance on the frozen planet of Hoth, the game promises quick, tactical showdowns packed with action, tension, and familiar Star Wars characters.

At its heart, Battle of Hoth builds on the tried-and-true Command and Colours system, originally used in Memoir ’44. Designed by Richard Borg, a veteran of tactical board games, along with Adrien Martinot, this new take brings streamlined yet strategic gameplay to the Star Wars universe. It’s designed for 2–4 players, plays in about 30 minutes, and is accessible enough for newcomers while offering enough depth to keep seasoned wargamers engaged.

Players can choose to lead either the Empire or the Rebels, each with their own distinct units and tactics. The Empire fields massive AT-AT walkers and overwhelming firepower, while the Rebels counter with speeders, infantry, and well-timed strikes. Gameplay revolves around command cards that dictate movement and combat, encouraging smart positioning and timing rather than just brute force.

One of the game’s standout features is its campaign system. The box includes 17 different scenarios—some playable as standalone skirmishes, others linked into narrative-driven campaigns. What happens in one mission can carry over into the next, so each decision really matters. For a deeper, more immersive experience, players can bring six iconic Star Wars heroes and villains into play using optional Leader Cards. Characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Leia, and General Veers add unique abilities that can turn the tide of battle, introducing dramatic twists and powerful tactics. Alternatively, dive into two multi-scenario campaigns, where each victory (or defeat!) carries forward, influencing the next mission and adding real weight to every decision, while building an evolving narrative with lasting consequences.

The board is made up of modular hex tiles, allowing for a range of battlefield setups. The box also comes with detailed miniatures, including snowtroopers, Rebel soldiers, speeders, even AT-ATs, along with custom dice and tokens that bring the frozen battlefield of Hoth to life.

Early previews from UK Games Expo in May has left fans buzzing, with many praising the game’s balance of simplicity and strategy, as well as its strong thematic feel. Whether you’re a longtime Star Wars fan or just looking for a tactical game that’s quick to set up and rewarding to master, Battle of Hoth is set to become a firm fan favourite.
