It wasn’t that long ago we were talking about the biggest tabletop Kickstarter ever for the Cyberpunk TCG, now Avantris Entertainment’s Neon Odyssey has officially become the most-funded tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) Kickstarter campaign of all time, raising more than $15.2m (£11.2m) from over 46,000 backers.
The record-breaking crowdfunding campaign surpassed its original $60,000 funding goal by more than 25,000%, setting a new benchmark for the tabletop RPG industry and cementing Avantris Entertainment as one of the hobby’s fastest-growing publishers.
The science-fantasy roleplaying game reached its funding target within seconds of launching on Kickstarter and generated more than $3m during its first three hours. By the end of its 30-day campaign, Neon Odyssey had amassed over $15.2m in pledges, making it the highest-funded TTRPG Kickstarter project ever.
“Honestly, this is hard to wrap our heads around,” said Avantris Entertainment Co-Founder Mikey Gilder.
“Neon Odyssey started as this big, ridiculous dream of building a massive science-fantasy universe for people to play in, and the community showed up for it in a way we’ll never forget. We’re incredibly grateful to every single backer who helped make this happen.”
Before Neon Odyssey, the record for the highest-funded TTRPG Kickstarter was the Cosmere RPG, which raised $15.15m from more than 55,000 backers in 2024. Cosmere overtook the previous RPG record-holder, Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, which raised $9.53m.
Following the success of The Crooked Moon, Avantris Entertainment’s folk-horror supplement for Dungeons & Dragons 5E that raised more than $4m on Kickstarter, Neon Odyssey takes players from haunted forests to the far reaches of space.
Designed for Dungeons & Dragons 5.5E, the project is a sprawling 1,400-page science-fantasy trilogy set in the neon-lit galaxy of Stardust Rhapsody. Inspired by classic science-fiction films, retro video games, animation and synthwave culture, the setting combines cosmic adventure with vibrant worldbuilding.
The books will include a full campaign setting, starship rules, cinematic space combat, new character options, alien creatures, bounty hunting missions, factions and interstellar exploration.
Avantris launched the campaign alongside a fully animated trailer and music video featuring an original song by synthwave band The Midnight, with animation provided by Knights of the Light Table.
Neon Odyssey is currently scheduled for delivery to Kickstarter backers in 2027, with a wider retail release planned to follow.
The campaign’s success continues a broader trend of blockbuster tabletop crowdfunding projects, demonstrating the growing appetite for ambitious, premium RPG settings and supplements beyond traditional publishing channels.
Alongside the Kickstarter milestone, Avantris announced that tabletop RPG media personality Todd Kenreck has joined the company as Director of Media.
Kenreck is widely known for his work as a writer, video producer and presenter within the tabletop roleplaying space. In his new position, he will help expand Avantris Entertainment’s growing multimedia output and community-focused content initiatives.
