At the dawn of a new set in almost any trading card game, fans gather for what are officially called store competitions or pre-release events. In reality, they are celebrations. With the arrival of Star Wars Unlimited: A Lawless Time, that celebration took on a galactic scale as press and players gathered in London for a special preview event hosted by asmodee.

Taking place at The Walt Disney Company headquarters in London, the venue set the tone for a fully immersive Star Wars experience. Stormtroopers stood watch around the room as fans, press and tabletop gaming enthusiasts gathered to get hands-on with the new set. Thankfully, we were not the droids they were looking for!

It was a fitting backdrop for Star Wars Unlimited, the trading card game developed by Fantasy Flight Games, as excitement built around one of its biggest updates yet.

A Lawless Time Introduces Major Changes to Star Wars Unlimited

The day began with an introduction from asmodee, including a special video message from the Fantasy Flight Games team behind the game.

A Lawless Time marks a significant evolution for Star Wars Unlimited, bringing several major updates:

• The first rotation, removing the earliest sets from competitive play and reshaping the meta
• Continued support for qualifier tournaments, which have seen strong attendance in the UK
• The introduction of the Eternal format, allowing all cards ever released to remain playable
• New Twin Suns decks, expanding the increasingly popular multiplayer format with exclusive cards

The set also introduces triple-aspect cards, powerful additions that reward carefully constructed decks.

Booster Pack Updates and New Rare Cards

Changes have also been made to booster packs. While the 16-card format remains, black-border foil cards have been removed following player feedback. In their place:

• Non-foil prestige cards now appear more frequently
• Players have a higher chance of pulling Hyperspace cards
• Carbonite Packs now include serialised cards, some limited to just 50 copies

These updates aim to make pack openings more exciting for both players and collectors.

Hands-On With Star Wars Unlimited Pre-release Gameplay

The highlight of the event was the chance to play using the pre-release box, which includes six booster packs, two leader cards, tokens, instructions and a deck box.

Players of all experience levels took part, from competitors preparing for the Galactic Championships in Las Vegas to complete newcomers. The atmosphere captured the welcoming and inclusive nature of the tabletop gaming community.

Balancing strategy with fandom proved to be part of the challenge. Building a deck meant choosing between new mechanics, powerful combinations and favourite Star Wars characters. A Jabba the Hutt-led deck may not have secured victory on the day, but like any trading card game, it is only the beginning of the journey.

Star Wars Actor Genevieve O’Reilly Surprises Fans

One of the most memorable moments came with the appearance of Genevieve O’Reilly, known for playing Mon Mothma in the Disney+ series Andor.

O’Reilly met attendees, signed cards and even took time to learn how to play the game herself. Star Wars actors have become a familiar presence at these events, with Alastair Petrie, known as General Drevan, attending a similar gathering last year.

Star Wars Unlimited Continues to Grow

With A Lawless Time, Star Wars Unlimited continues to expand its player base and refine its gameplay. Between new mechanics, evolving formats and stronger collector appeal, the game is building momentum ahead of future releases such as Ashes of The Empire.
