Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is the latest acclaimed video game to be turned into a board game

Critically acclaimed stealth video game Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is sneaking onto the tabletop.

Released in 2016 for PC, and later on PS4 and Xbox One, Shadow Tactics is a real-time tactical stealth game set in Japan’s Edo period that sees players controlling a squad of characters who infiltrate enemy camps, avoiding detection and assassinating when necessary.

The game’s upcoming board game adaptation will stick to this format, putting players in control of five different characters with unique skills who must defeat the forces of an opposing overlord player and take out their target. The characters will be represented in-game by miniatures.

Multiple scenarios with varying maps and objectives make up a story-based campaign, with actions having an effect on future missions and outcomes potentially earning achievements and bonuses.

The overlord also gains additional abilities, with the advantage of having numbers on their side when it comes to soldiers and samurai.

Behind Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – The Board Game is Antler Games, the tabletop studio responsible for card game Critters Below and Saltlands, the Mad Maxian post-apocalyptic survival board game that we found admirable if a little disappointing when we reviewed it last year. Saltlands co-designer and Critters Below creator Gergely Kruppa will be leading the gameplay design solo on the new game.

Antler has plans to launch a Kickstarter for its take on Shadow Tactics in the third quarter of this year, with a full release date yet to be announced.
