The King is Dead, Long Live… You?
If you know the term Oriflamme, you’ll either know it as the French Battle Standard suggesting no prisoners to be taken, or you’ll know it as the game we considered a Must Play, that won the 2020 As d'Or – Jeu de l'Année.
On the slim chance you‘re not familiar with either (as really, who doesn't know French Battle Standards by name?), we have some expertise in the latter. Oriflamme is a game set amidst the feud for the French Royal Crown after the death of the king. You control the fate of your family by trying to gain the most influence points, so that you might ascend to the empty thrown (and win!). As a tactical card game, you’ll be playing hidden cards and using all of your cunning to beat your opponents.
It’s a game for 3-5 players, at a bargain price of around £15, and each game takes about 20 minutes to play. However, since Coronavirus has forced us into lockdown, Studio H noted in a tweet that “it’s not always easy to gather enough schemers for a table of #oriflamme”, and so with the Hesling brothers and Forgenext, they have created a free to download two player rule set, to make it playable for even more people.
Within these rules, the main difference is that you’ll be playing as two families, rather than a single family within your turns. It’s certainly more to think about, but whether this will increase your chances of winning is yet to be discovered.
You can download two player rule set, and we'd love to hear what you think of it over on our socials!
