Lord of the Rings Rights bought by Asmodee Owning Embracer Group

Saints Row, Goat Simulator, Asmodee and the Hobbit?

It doesn't feel too long ago that the leading board game distributor in the UK, Asmodee, was purchased by the Embracer Group, for a cool €2.75 million. If that seemed like a big purchase, it's swiftly followed by that of Middle-earth Enterprises, offering worldwide rights to motion pictures, video games, merchandising, stage productions, literary works, and importantly for many readers of this - board games.

“I am truly excited to have The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, one of the world’s most epic fantasy franchises join the Embracer family, opening up more transmedia opportunities including synergies across our global group. I am thrilled to see what lies in the future for this IP with Freemode and Asmodee as a start within the group. Going forward, we also look forward to collaborating with both existing and new external licensees of our increasingly stronger IP portfolio, says Lars Wingefors, Founder and Group CEO Embracer Group.

Asmodee of course, is already one of the most successful licensees of The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, through the likes of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, and The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth, and so early public comments hope to see this continue. The legacy of Lord of the Rings on tabletop is well documented, and in fact we celebrated the very same in the July 2022 issue of Tabletop Gaming magazine

The Embracer Group has confirmed the continuation of existing highly anticipated projects, with a reference to exploring the iconic characters specifically through film, but also through merchandising and other experiences. Could we see a Gollum based tabletop game? Time will tell.
