2017 update includes massively expanded rules for multiplayer and narrative games

One of last year’s biggest releases for Games Workshop’s Warhammer: Age of Sigmar is getting a major new edition in 2017.

The General’s Handbook essentially serves as a core rulebook for the wargame, detailing the rulesets for the three key play styles – open, narrative and matched – that the revamped fantasy miniatures game is built around.

The General’s Handbook 2017 massively expands on two of the sections, introducing ‘Triumph & Treachery’ events for open play that allow players to pull off mid-game betrayals during the mode suited to flexible team and multiplayer matches.

The narrative rules see the biggest change, as the campaign-driven Path to Glory mode has been stripped out ahead of the ruleset – which sees players building their forces up from a handful of models to a sizeable army over the course of several games. Taking its space are new rules for siege warfare and Time of War battlefield rules that cover locations in every realm of the game’s universe.

Matched play has similarly been updated with new Battleplans, rules of one and updated point values for units from every faction.

The book also builds on the four Grand Alliance army traits seen in the previous edition of the Handbook, introducing Allegiance Abilities for Fyreslayers, Seraphone, Slaaneshi hosts, Nighthaunts and more.

The General’s Handbook 2017 will come to Warhammer: Age of Sigmar later this year in a paperback form.
