Companion apps for board games on phones and tablets are old hat by now, but this might well be the first game we’ve seen that you can play using an AI.

Escape Room in a Box: The Werewolf Experiment is the debut escape-the-room title from Mattel, which originally raised over $135,000 on Kickstarter in March of last year before being picked up by the toy giant.

The game includes 19 ‘physical and mental’ puzzles that are set in a one-hour race against time to find three codes to unlock the door and escape before players are turned into werewolves.

The box can be played by itself, but there will also be a companion app released for Amazon’s virtual home assistant Alexa that adds a timer, clue system and custom soundtrack to the game.

The Werewolf Experiment will be out this November and cost $29.99 (£23). Like the similar Exit: The Game series, the game is a one-time experience, but it includes instructions on how to reset the contents so it can be played again, plus a script that lets one player who has already completed the puzzles to act as a game master and host for a new group.
