Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is coming back with a brand new fourth edition later this year after almost a decade away.

The roleplaying game set in Games Workshop’s miniature wargame universe was last updated back in 2009 by Fantasy Flight’s third edition, which substantially overhauled the game’s ruleset and encouraged greater co-operation between party members by sharing talents, and was declared 'complete' – bringing an end to future expansions – in 2014.

With Games Workshop and Fantasy Flight’s partnership coming to an end in February, the fate of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay had been left unclear.

However, Doctor Who RPG and Adventures in Middle-earth roleplaying publisher Cubicle 7 has now announced that it will release a fourth edition of the title during 2017.

Details on how the new edition will compare to past iterations of the RPG – which first appeared in 1986 and didn’t receive a full second edition until nearly two decades later in 2004 – remain unclear.

Cubicle 7’s announcement simply hints that the game will take its cues from the first and second versions of the game. The second edition replaced the original’s magic system and updated the lore in line with changes applied to the miniatures title.

"Like so many gamers I grew up on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay,” CEO Dominic McDowall added in a statement. “It's an iconic setting and I'm thrilled to be working on this new edition of the game.

“Our team have a huge breadth of experience with Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and I’m excited to be able to bring the Cubicle 7 approach to the Old World. We’ll be revealing more of our plans in the coming months.”
