Gotta fund fast

A new board game based on speedy video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog is zooming onto Kickstarter next month and – you guessed it – it includes miniatures.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers is the latest project from Shinobi 7, the joint tabletop studio founded by Super Dungeon Explore outlet Ninja Division and US manga publisher Seven Seas Entertainment.

The game appears to be closer to one of the Sonic racing spin-offs than the original series of platformers, pitting Sonic against a combination of Knuckles, Tails, Amy and Dr. Eggman in a sprint through an obstacle course. Which, when you think about it, is a little unfair.

The gameplay is yet to be detailed, with the only information being that two to five people will pick a racer, select a route and battle to cross the finish line first while dodging their rivals’ attacks. There’s mention of speed control, abilities and special powers, plus the mandatory golden rings to collect along the way.

A Kickstarter for a core set will come with five 40mm pre-painted models of the characters, with promise of future expansions, each with another model and their ‘racer profile’.

The race course is said to change with each match, but other expansions will introduce extra sections of track to add to the mix.

While February’s Kickstarter will include “exclusives and limited-edition items”, Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers is due for a release in shops in the second half of 2018.
