Headed to fifth edition this May

Dungeons & Dragons’ fifth edition is getting its biggest book of beasties since Volo’s Guide to Monsters.

Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes is said to be similar to 2016’s monster manual, packing in a bunch of lore and stats for creatures from across the D&D multiverse – not just Forgotten Realms, but places like Greyhawk, too.

The book will include some deep dives on the relationships and conflicts between classic D&D races – such as drow and elves, githyanki and githzerai, dwarves and duergar, and the demon/devil blood war – but will also throw in some brand new creations.

Some of the monsters confirmed as being in the mix are archdevils and elder elementals, with extra player options for tieflings and elves, but Wizards of the Coast confirmed in an announcement stream that it has no plans to ever introduce a Illithid playable character option.

More than half of the 256-page volume will be focused on monsters, with a particular focus on offering up ideas for characters at higher levels – there'll be a healthy supply of rollable tables for DMs and players alike.

Tome of Foes will be out on May 29th, with a limited-edition alternative version hitting hobby stores ahead of time on May 18th. It’ll set you back $50 – or around £36.
