The world’s most famous RPG, one of the most iconic family board games of all time and a card game classic have all been nominated to enter the National Toy Hall of Fame.

The Toy Hall of Fame is part of The Strong, a museum focused on ‘play’ based in Rochester, New York.

59 toys and games have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since it opened in 1998, with anybody welcome to nominate a worthy addition.

Past honourees have included tabletop icons such as Monopoly, Scrabble, The Game of Life, draughts and chess alongside video game systems including the Nintendo Game Boy and Atari 2600, as well as famous toys such as Barbie, Mr Potato Head and Lego.

12 toys and games have been shortlisted for possible inclusion in the Hall of Fame this year, with two or three ultimately being inducted.

Arguably the biggest contender for tabletop games is legendary RPG Dungeons & Dragons (seriously, how is it not already in there?), with Christmastime staple Cluedo (Shortened to just ‘Clue’ in the US) and massively popular family card game Uno also worth highlighting.

They’ll be up against the might of Transformers, pinball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Nerf, Fisher-Price Little People and Care Bears, as well as the simple but effective swing (yep, the thing that you sit on), colouring book and bubble wrap. Seriously, bubble wrap.

We’d say that Dungeons & Dragons deserves to go in, thanks to its wide-reaching influence not just on tabletop designers but movie directors, actors, video game developers, illustrators, novelists and even musicians – pretty much anyone who has ever imagined being someone else. But then again, have you ever tried popping bubble wrap? It’s really addictive.

Either way, 2016’s winners will be announced and inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame on November 10th. You can nominate future inductees through the Strong website. How long until Pandemic Legacy or Twilight Struggle make it in?
