Wizards of the Coast president wants to bring variants of existing games to digital

World War II strategy classic Axis & Allies could see a release on mobile in the next year or so, and it might come with some unexpected surprises.

That’s according to Wizards of the Coast president Chris Cocks, who recently told Rolling Stone’s Glixel that he wanted to bring more of the publisher’s tabletop hits to the digital world, including titles from its more traditional Avalon Hill division.

Asked specifically about a potential tablet release of Axis & Allies, Cocks replied: “I think we will be correcting that in 12 to 18 months.”

Even more intriguing is Cocks’ desire to not only faithfully convert board games for screens, but to build them out with new ways to play, too – including one particularly surprising suggestion for the historical wargame.

“We might throw some fun variants in there as well,” he continued. “I want to make new games. I want to make variants of existing games. What about Axis and Allies and Zombies?”

Of course, this is no confirmation of either the app or a zombie mode, but Cocks added that Wizards keeps an eye on what players are calling for on social media – even if that means moving away from what some fans might expect from their favourite series.

“One thing about gamers and the gaming community is that a lot of people want to go in and play and be a part of the community,” he said. “But they also want to be the last one in, because they want to feel special.

“We think the community feels more special the bigger it gets.”
