American McGee, the creator of the twisted video game sequel to Alice in Wonderland, is making his first tabletop game
After making a name for himself in the world of video games with his gothic and warped takes on fairy tales, designer American McGee is bringing his unique style to the tabletop.
Out of the Woods is the first physical game by McGee, who is best-known for American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns, his twisted sequels to Lewis Carroll’s classic adventures in Wonderland. He also helped develop versions of influential shooters Doom and Quake, as well as an episodic adaptation of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, simply titled American McGee’s Grimm.
Like those games, Out of the Woods is inspired by fairy tales, featuring references to ten classic stories including Cinderella, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel.
In the game, players must attempt to get rid of their hand of cards, with the last person holding cards eaten by wolves. Actions include the ability to attack or burden other players, which can be fended off with block and reflect cards.
There are seven different action cards and 40 character cards, and the game supports two to four players.
As well as the $20 (£15) core game, which goes live on Kickstarter on July 18th, McGee has plans for an illustrated book including the ten stories featured in the game.
