Just when you thought it had got out, comical crime caper RPG Fiasco is back in with a second edition

Fiasco, the hilarious roleplaying game about wannabe criminals screwing up, is getting a new edition.

Jason Morningstar’s GM-less storytelling game first appeared almost ten years ago in 2009, instantly grabbing attention for its tabletop take on the caper-gone-wrong movie genre.

The slick ruleset was based around a d6-driven system, with players quickly creating characters, defining their relationships to each other and playing through two acts – plus a dramatic ‘tilt’ and ‘aftermath’ – in just a few hours.

The game went on to pick up the Diana Jones award – making it just the fourth RPG to do so – and an Origins Award nomination, as well as various other accolades.

Fiasco was expanded in 2011 with supplement The Fiasco Companion, which added extra playsets, playing advice and alternative resolution tables. The RPG has also had a number of playsets released in the years since it debuted, some of which were collected as the Fiasco Playset Anthology.

Publisher Bully Pulpit Games has now announced that Fiasco will get a second edition, described as being currently work-in-progress, with early previews at this year’s Origins.

Although Fiasco’s slim and fully-formed foundations may make the idea of a second edition sound a little strange, Bully Pulpit’s Steve Segedy took to Reddit to try and clarify what the upcoming version may include.

“It's good to hear you like the game as it is!” he wrote in response to one user. “We're not planning to replace the existing game, and ‘second edition’ may have been misleading. We have what we think are some really good ideas for the game in a different format, that we hope will make the game easier to understand and play for more people.

“It's going to be a while yet before we would release the game, however – what we're promoting for Origins is a sneak peak at our ideas and playtest prototype. We'll definitely be sharing more information with everyone as it comes together.”
