Ultra Pro signs deal to make board and card games and accessories based on Luc Besson’s 2017 sci-fi film

Have you seen the trailer for Luc Besson’s new sci-fi flick Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets? No? Go watch it, then come back. Sorted? Now prepare to get even more excited, because it looks like there’s a tabletop game based on the movie in the works.

Accessories manufacturer Ultra Pro has inked a deal with EuropeCorp, the film studio owned by the Lucy, Fifth Element and Leon: The Professional filmmaker, to produce not just accessories but full board games and card games based on the 2017 release.

It’s not the first time the merchandise firm has explicitly hinted at publishing its own games, following its acquisition of Killer Bunnies studio Playroom and the rights to Stone Blade’s titles, including deckbuilder Ascension.

Valerian is an adaptation of the 1960s French comic book series Valérian and Laureline, and stars a number of big names, such as Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen and, bizarrely, the pop star Rihanna.

What the tabletop spin-off of Valerian might be like remains to be seen – as does the film itself, which is planned to hit the silver screen next July.
