Spin-off includes a unique mode where players defend The Wall from giants and wildlings

It seems almost unbelievable that it’s taken this long for a Game of Thrones version of Catan to appear, but what’s more surprising is that it looks like the game will be more than a simple reskin.

Catan: A Game of Thrones has been designed by original Settlers of Catan creator Klaus Teuber alongside his son Benjamin, and – although it bears the name of the TV series – looks to feature artwork based on George RR Martin’s original series of A Song of Ice & Fire novels, rather than screenshots from the show.

According to a product listing on German retailer Spiele-Offensive, the box includes a Westeros-themed spin on the standard game of resource gathering and building, but also packs in a second gameplay variant unique to the setting.

In the Night Watch mode, players take on the role of the defenders of the northern Wall, which defends the kingdoms from the undead white walkers and wildlings.

Three to four players will build up resources, construct settlements and supply the guardians along the wall with necessities, helping them to fend off attacks from giants and wild creatures from the north.

Some of the characters from the series make an appearance through hero cards, which help to bolster the defence.

Catan: A Game of Thrones is reportedly due for release sometime this October, and will cost around €90 (£79).
