A monster book of monsters (and a shiny gift set).
D&D announced today two new products, the first being a D&D Rules Expansion Gift Set, and the latter being the hotly anticipated Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.
The former gift set is one which presents as a follow up to the core three books. Players will find they need the Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Monster Manuel, but that subsequent rulebooks present more as optional than necessary. Beneficial for Dungeon Master's especially, the new gift set combines Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, and a new volume, Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse (more details below), which offer a great combination of new rules, options, and guides, without necessarily needing to purchase the full back catalogue (and with updates included). It will be available from 25th January 2022 (having cited shipping and printing delays as the cause of it not being ready by Christmas), but will be available in both standard cover, and in a new alt cover set. These differ from previous alt covers – containing new art styles, with foil, 3D textures, and a new illustration for the GM Screen – and is limited edition. You can pre-order your copy here.
Of course the big news is the new book, which brings together over 30 updated player character races from various sources, as well as a bestiary of over 250 monsters. For the first time, you'll see the Tortle package in print, and sources include that of Volo's Guide to Monsters, and Mordenkainens Tome of Foes. These have been balanced in terms of story, and in game balance also, as the first time all player races were together in one book. Now, they offer comparable versitility, which means that many races have become more powerful, to provide contributions in line with those in the wider group. Pre-orders will open on the 18th January 2021, but will not be available as a standalone (that being, outside of the above gift set), until May 17th 2022.
