Series of organised play competitions to be held at UK Games Expo in June

Fantasy Flight Games has announced a major new European tournament for 2017, and it’s set to take place right here in the UK.

Much like its North American counterpart, the 2017 European Championships will cover all of the publisher’s competitive organised play titles, such as X-Wing, Star Wars: Armada, Android: Netrunner and the Game of Thrones LCG.

Competitors of any nationality and skill can enter, as the pool of contenders is whittled down by Swiss rounds (where players earn points for each match result and the highest-scoring competitors make it through) and subsequently elimination to find an overall winner.

The victor of each game’s contest will receive paid travel and accommodation for the World Championships, plus two free entries for that game’s World Championship main event and the chance to enter straight into the second round of the global competition thanks to a first round bye. They’ll also be given the chance to work with FFG designers to create a future prize card for the title.

Fantasy Flight has previously held the National Championships in the UK – last year in Birmingham’s ICC – but the new European Championships will be separate from that tournament, much like the North American and National Championships were divided over in the US last year.

The inaugural 2017 European Championships will be held during the UK Games Expo from June 2nd to 4th in Birmingham. Tickets will go on sale in December.
