Latest edition of Reiner Knizia’s 1998 game adds alternate board, gameplay variants and overhauled visuals

Further cementing its Euro Classics range as the greatest hits of legendary designer Reiner Knizia, Fantasy Flight has announced that Through the Desert will be the next game to join the collection.

The good doctor’s 1998 Spiel des Jahres Recommended game of placing plastic camels to create trade routes joins previous Knizia titles Tigris & Euphrates, Samurai and Ra in the set of revived Eurogame hits, and will similarly be granted a significantly overhauled new version later this year to mark the occasion.

The game’s visuals will be updated with freshened-up artwork, with the board now including an alternate map on the reverse that uses the Niger river and southern Sahara for a different style of play as the various caravan leaders compete over the source of water.

The upcoming edition will also introduce extra gameplay variants, with tweaks such as adjusting the order of caravan leader placement or keeping scores hidden.

Most importantly, there’ll be 180 plastic camels in the box. Who doesn’t love a tiny plastic animal?

The $45 (£34) set will be out later in 2017.
